Synopsis:
When their bus breaks down, a group of unsuspecting tourists are forced to seek shelter in an abandoned barn beside a sinister windmill where, legend has it, a Devil-worshipping miller once ground the bones of locals instead of grain. Inadvertently awakening the mysterious evil in the windmill, members of the group start disappearing, and secrets are revealed that seem to mark them all for doom.
We like it because:
This creepy, ghoulish nail-biter benefits not only from a top quality cast, headed up by the fantastic Noah Taylor (a regular in Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders, and star of Simon Rumley’s horror favourite Red, White & Blue) and Patrick Baladi (David Brent’s dance off nemesis in The Office), but also a unique location (a splendidly spooky Dutch windmill), and a terrific new horror villain in the shape of ‘The Miller’, who has some nasty surprises in store for the hapless, stranded tourists.
From the production team behind the 2013 cult hit Frankenstein’s Army, The Windmill Massacre makes no bones about following in the tradition of the classic Eighties slasher film – cue a remote setting, a group of beleaguered strangers, plenty of humorous banter and inventive kills. Nick Jongerius, making his directorial debut, pulls it all off with aplomb, ensuring 85 minutes of gags, gore and, erm, grain. As one of the characters in the film says, “This isn’t hell – this is Holland!”
With its European Premiere at this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest in London, and sure to be an audience favourite, The Windmill Massacre places the scythe-wielding Miller in the pantheon of top slasher villains, alongside the likes of Freddy Krueger and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface.
