Fast sell:

An adaptation of the massively popular, critically acclaimed Persona 4 videogame, Persona 4: The Animation sees high schooler Yu Narukami and his friends unlocking their magical 'persona' powers to try and solve a baffling series of murders and defeat the malevolent Shadows. Mixing slice-of-life comedy, tense drama and gripping action, Persona 4: The Animation is a must-watch title for gamers and anime fans alike.

Key talent:

Created by AIC A.S.T.A. and helmed by Angel Beats! director Seiji Kishi, Persona 4: The Animation stays true to its roots, keeping the same main Japanese and English voice casts from the original game as well as both of the game's character designers, Kazuma Kaneko and Shigenori Soejima. In addition, Shoji Meguro returns as soundtrack composer.

Synopsis:

Soon after high school student Yu Narukami moves to Inaba to stay with his uncle and cousin, the sleepy rural town is rocked by a series of bizarre murders. Inaba is also awash with rumours of the so-called 'Midnight Channel' - that watching a switched-off TV set on rainy midnights will reveal the viewer's soul mate. Things get even odder when Yu and his new school friends discover that they can actually enter the TV sets, transporting them to a fog-shrouded world inhabited by hostile creatures known as Shadows ...as well as a friendly anthropomorphic bear named Teddie.

When the Shadows attack, a power within Yu is awakened, giving him the ability to summon a powerful Persona to fight for him in battle. But while Yu and his friends now have a way to strike back at the malevolent Shadows, they still need to unravel the mystery of the ongoing murders, the Midnight Channel and the mysterious world inside their televisions ...and the body count is rising!

We like it because:

Persona 4: The Animation captures the spirit of the hit videogame, staying faithful to the original story without scrimping on its own creativity. Featuring a colourful main cast, an intriguing plot chock full of twists and turns, and great character design by the duo behind the game's art style, this series is one of the finest videogame adaptations to hit our screens. A must for all Persona fans, Seiji Kishi's skilful direction ensures that Persona 4: The Animation is accessible to newcomers as well.

Editor's Notes:

Originally a spin-off of the Megami Tensei demon-summoning series of games, the Persona games centre on groups of teenagers with the ability to summon facets of their psyche, known as Personas, to fight for them. The first game, Revelations: Persona, was released on the PlayStation in 1996, while the latest - Persona 4 Golden and Persona 4 Arena - will see a UK release in 2013.

Persona 4: The Animation was made by AIC A.S.T.A. under the guidance of major production house Aniplex. AIC's previous credits include Bamboo Blade, Amagami SS and Strike Witches 2. Meanwhile, show director Seiji Kishi's other work includes Angel Beats!, Galaxy Angel Rune and Kamisama Dolls.
